about

I am a retired licensed professional and consulting engineer with expertise in the design and construction of wood structures. (Licenses in Idaho and Washington State still active.)  I have also designed reinforced concrete structures and elements, structural steel, reinforced concrete and segmental block retaining walls, and other structural building elements and systems. I have extensive design, consulting, and teaching (University setting) experience. I have also practiced demolition engineering and mountain stream hydrology, and have served as an expert witness on building construction, hydrology, and structural failure cases. I have extensive experience in building code and standards writing, revisions and approvals, as well as building product acceptance criteria and building product evaluations. I continue to participate in a number of wood and wood-design-related organizations, such as the American Wood Council Wood Design Standards Committee (we write the National Design Specification for Wood Construction), ASTM Committee D07, and the American Institute of Timber Construction (AITC).  I also build wood structures myself.

Mostly, I just love to write.
